What is Second Saturday?
Second Saturday is a once a month outreach to our community designed to provide meaningful engagement between the people of TrueNorth Church (TNC) and the community.
Who can come?
Everyone (including kids)
What are we doing?
Each month TNC will provide a variety of serving options such as helping underprivileged children and feeding the hungry in downtown Augusta. The primary focus of this 2nd Saturday is cleaning up local schools. Your job is to show up and serve—it’s that simple. Bring the whole family (there will be kid-friendly opportunities too).
When is Second Saturday?
Saturday, August 11 from 8:30 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Where do we meet?
TNC Office at 419 Martintown Road.
TNC will provide transportation to the volunteer sites.
See you there!
Mike Fiedler
Director of Connections
A team of 10 TNC’ers returned last Saturday night after a week of work at one of our global partner churches – El Camino Bible Church in Escuintla, Guatemala. Under the leadership of Big Mike Fiedler, our Director of Connections, the team worked on the church property Monday through Thursday. We painted the church ceiling, built some walls for their children’s ministry, painted exterior walls, painted and tiled a dental clinic room and made repairs on the church stage. Team members pictured left to right include Big Mike, Lance Collins, David Counsellor, David Czapala, Katie Czapala, Sandy Collins, yours truly – Gene Jennings, Joe McCain, Kathie Bleile, and Steve Darr.
The church families welcomed us with open arms. Each day the ladies of the church cooked us an incredible lunch including homemade tortillas (pictured below).
We stayed in the homes of the church families which in retrospect was perhaps the highlight of the week for us. It’s one thing to go on a mission trip, work hard all day, and go back to a hotel with modern conveniences but it is another thing to go to your host home at the end of the day and do life with them each evening. The accommodations were simple and far from anything we are used to but it was a tremendous blessing to be hosted by such warm, loving Christ-followers.
In addition to construction work, we participated in two worship services, one at El Camino, San Cristobal (a suburb of Guatemala City) and the Wednesday night service at El Camino, Escuintla. On Friday, we walked up to the Pacaya Volcano which is 8372 feet high. It took us about 2 hours to make the steep climb to the top. By the time we got to the top, a rainstorm came along and drenched the whole crew. It only took us about an hour to get down to the bottom again but we were saturated and muddy at the end of our excursion.
I simply don’t have room to tell you all of the details about our trip but be sure to stop one of us and ask about our mission. They will be excited to tell you everything! (And ask them what “Mas Frijoles!” means.) Pray for two more teams that will be in Guatemala soon – one in July and one in August. We are establishing a wonderful partnership with the El Camino churches there and we look forward to see what God is going to do in the future.
